Review: Sushi Station

Although Lawrence may be host to a number of sushi restaurants, the newest addition to the group is probably the most unique. Sushi Station, which opened last year on the corner of 23rd and Louisiana, is the first restaurant in Lawrence with a revolving sushi bar. Though the restaurant serves a wide variety of tasty sushi and other Japanese dishes, the design of the restaurant and the food’s presentation is what truly makes it stand out.

At Sushi Station, there are two different options for seating: one at a bar directly in front of the conveyor belt and the other in a few booths, which are also close to the belt.

One of the best parts of Sushi Station’s conveyor belt is that, once seated, you can immediately start picking your food and eating it without any kind of wait. A server does help you with drinks, sauces, and any special items off of the menu that you might want to order; however, everything you really need is rotating around you. From edamame to sashimi to special rolls, the conveyor belt provides a wide variety of tasty food with zero wait time.

The individual items at Sushi Station are priced by the color of the plate they are on; at the end of your meal, your server will tally up the number and colors of your plates to determine your final bill. Although sushi has the reputation of being expensive, most items at Sushi Station are pretty reasonable. For example, a basic salmon and avocado roll with five pieces of sushi is only $2.99. However, the excitement of seeing new items come around the bend can make it tricky to only eat a few items, so the final bill can quickly add up.

Though Sushi Station’s sushi conveyor belt makes it a novel and quick place to get good quality sushi and other Japanese food, it is not the best sushi in Lawrence. More upscale establishments such as Wa serve better sushi with higher quality ingredients; however, for the convenience, price, and the pure excitement of watching your spicy tuna roll move along the conveyor belt to your seat, Sushi Station is an excellent choice.
