Middle School Editorial: Human Robots
From typewriters to Apple watches, technology has evolved and adapted more than ever in the past century and modern society has followed along with it. Almost everyone in my grade has a phone and to be honest, I’m not sure we could survive without them. Technology allows people to contact people all over the world and in addition to that, some of that contact is necessary. There are definitely a lot of drawbacks of the abundant technology in today’s world, too, including fixation on devices and interaction with screens instead of people. However, I think that the pros outnumber the cons and technology is a positive and integral part of our world.
First of all, technology is essential for social interaction today — most teenagers use their phones for contact almost every day, whether texting, calling, Snapchatting or anything else. It is also used at school: Seabury uses iPads daily. There are downsides though: time spent on technology has consequences like detracting from real-life interactions and not spending time outside or reading. Many teenagers get sucked into their devices and miss out on experiences.
Still, our culture has adapted with technology. Kids born in 2018 will grow up with iPhones, MacBooks and a world of new innovations. It’s been 72 years since the 50-ton first digital computer and now we have a myriad of technology at our fingertips. Modern technology shapes society and carves out culture. You are reading this right now because of the innovations that have changed our world. What would we do without it?
