Highschool Editorial: Human Robots

There is no way around it. You can try to ignore it, act like it does not exist or say that it has no purpose, yet it is quite obvious that technology is not only a part of this world, but it is the reason why we are currently in the position we are experiencing today. As a person who grew up through this era of technology it seems like I cannot go through a day without my phone, tablet, computer and other devices without losing my sanity, and I know for a fact that I am not alone in that idea. Some find it pathetic that I would need my bright-screened devices to function while others find it as a normal part of life. However, whether technology is bringing people together or separating us is a topic that does not get the right kind of attention. To be blunt, it is usually the older generations of people that accuse technology of deteriorating the quality of human connection. At first, I never understood what the source of their proclaimed problem came from, but I realized that their personal experiences is the true reason that their perspective is much different than the younger people of this world today. Those who grew up without the current technologies sometimes feel like the vast amounts of electronic devices are unnecessary. Who can blame them? To them, why ruin and degrade an authentic connection with something so inorganic? On the contrary, the younger generations seem to think the opposite: what is the problem with having technology, although inorganic, make connections more efficient? All because a new concept in introduced, does it mean it has to destroy the old system? It is obvious that too much usage of technology hinders the social skills necessary today. On that note, balance and harmony is key. I feel like technology makes more things possible Communication becoming easier fills the holes that existed before. Whether it is social media, emails, phone calls or texting, I can contact family and friends that are nowhere near my location with a click of a button. Although the conversation is not face-to-face, it does not take away from the fact that it is a real conversation even though if the voices travel through invisible waves for miles and miles. Through our devices we are all connected in a way we were not before.

Technology has its pros and cons, yet I believe that the pros triumph in this situation, improving the human connection. However, I think it will only inhibit us if utilized on its own. In combination, technological and natural communication can improve the condition of relationships. Technology bridges the gaps that were present in the past, thus bringing us closer together overall.
