"The Grinch"
And then it happened in the theater, if I may say, my love for “The Grinch” grew three sizes that day! Or, at least, it brought back some good memories. “The Grinch” is the third adaptation, and second animated one, of the original book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” by Dr. Seuss. Though the intended audience was definitely of a younger age group, the movie has something for all: surprisingly disorienting fast-paced scenes, getting to hear Benedict Cumberbatch voice Grinch, or bringing a feeling of nostalgia.
The movie opens with a fast-paced fly through Whoville which ultimately ends in the Grinch’s cave on Mount Crumpit. Having run out of food, he has to go down into the town he hates during the season he hates even more: Christmas. The movie then follows him and an adorable Cindy-Lou Who through their crazy hijinks and plans, leading up to the worst one of all. With the help of a two-ton reindeer and his dog Max, the Grinch decides to steal every Christmas decoration in Whoville.
There is no doubt that movie is intended for younger audiences, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. It was able to elaborate on the story in a way that was more entertaining than the original book. However, there were a few unnecessary scenes which felt like they were just there to fill space and did not really contribute to the humour or plot. But, in the end, though the story is about Christmas time, it emphasizes the importance of family and being together during the holidays. Everyone just wants to be together and be happy. It may not be Christmas quite yet, but the message is just as important for Thanksgiving and many other holidays of the year.
