“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” This should immediately make anybody think of the 1946 Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Directed by Frank Capra, this film is considered to be one of the best of all time, having been nominated for five Academy Awards and earning a spot on the top 100 American films put together by the American Film Institute. Believe it or not, Capra never intended the film to be thought of as a Christmas picture, but due to the message and feeling it gave off, it was eventually solidified as a Christmas classic. The movie shows a distraught, almost suicidal George Bailey, played by James Stewart, being shown by his guardian angel Clarence Oddbody, played by Henry Travers, what his town and the people in his life would be like without his good deeds.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is not one of the first Christmas movies that comes to mind but it is certainly one of the best. From seeing George’s flashbacks to his town in the present, the whole movie is presented perfectly. At first, the film can seem slow and a little boring and one might be tempted to find another movie to watch. I can assure you if you get through the beginning, the reward and ending is well worth the wait. While it is in black and white, the film should not be overlooked because its message just screams Christmas. Not only does the movie emit Christmas spirit, it also really makes you appreciate family and the people around you. As George sees all the people he has impacted you also feel the spirit of helping others.

During this holiday season, you might be tempted to watch some of the yearly classics, like “Home Alone” or “Elf”, but I would encourage you to watch “It's a Wonderful Life” for a different take on a holiday movie that is definitely for the better.
